IJTIMOIY FIKR CENTRE HOLDS ROUNDTABLE TO MARK UZBEK LANGUAGE DAY
On the occasion of Uzbek Language Day, celebrated on 21 October, the Republican centre of the study of the public opinion “Ijtimoiy fikr” hosted a roundtable discussion entitled “The State Language as the Foundation of National Identity and Spiritual Development”.
The event offered an opportunity to reflect on the importance of the mother tongue in society, its role in preserving national traditions and cultural values, and ways to promote the accurate and effective use of Uzbek in academic and professional settings.
Participants looked back at October 21, 1989, when Uzbek was granted the status of the state language, and discussed what that decision meant for the development of national statehood. They also spoke about current reforms aimed at strengthening the language’s place in public life.
During the meeting, staff shared their knowledge and experience, exploring the richness of Uzbek vocabulary, the importance of clear expression, adherence to literary norms and the language’s role in modern communication.
Particular attention was paid to the use of Uzbek in sociological research. For those studying public opinion, it is essential to formulate questions clearly and precisely, use words that respondents can easily understand and present findings accurately. The way survey questions are worded and scientific terminology is used can directly affect the reliability of the data collected and the quality of subsequent analysis.
Participants also explored ways to expand the use of Uzbek in science, information technology and digital communication amid globalisation and digital transformation. The discussion covered the development of high-quality research and information resources in the state language, as well as the importance of improving language skills among younger generations.
At the conclusion of the roundtable, participants highlighted the importance of the mother tongue in shaping national identity, preserving historical memory and passing on spiritual values from one generation to the next. They also emphasised its role in strengthening social cohesion.
The event also highlighted the practical significance of language proficiency in the Centre’s research and analytical activities. Such discussions help improve professional communication, enhance the quality of research and analytical materials, and encourage wider use of Uzbek in the centre’s research activities.
